•A method of comprehensively utilizing a dilute acidic sulfate effluent was developed.•Water, α-FeOOH and sulfuric acid were recovered by coupling solvent extraction–oxidation–hydrolysis in one step.•The raffinate purified by a cation exchange can reused as dilute sulfuric acid in the sulfate process.
