Triton X-100-induced membrane permeabilization depends on membrane phase state. Pores open as a well-defined event for the (partially) soluble lipid mixtures. Pores initially formed are small and grow at higher Triton X-100 concentration. Membrane composition and phase state modulate the membrane edge tension. Triton X-100 reduces the membrane edge tension of all lipid compositions investigated.
