China Geological Library is a public service
enterprise directly under the the Ministry of Land Resources.
Its mission is to provide top-quality information services to
the public about the geological sciences. As the national repository
of geoscience literature, CGL has a built up a rich collection
of nearly 700 000 publications from the last 200 years, 10 000
geological maps from around the world, and 5 large publication
databases with over 10 million records. The library has established
interlibrary loan relations with over 400 geological institutions
in more than 60 countries. CGL is a member of the Commission for
the Management and Application of Geoscience Information of the
International Union of Geological Sciences and a council member
of the China Library Association and the China Society for Scientific
and Technical Information. The library presently has a staff of
one hundred.

Responsibilities of CGL
, To collect and catalog domestic and foreign geoscience literature;
to construct a secure electronic repository for national geological
publications; to construct a digital geological library.
, To manage and disseminate domestic and foreign geoscience literature;
to provide specialist geological literature services for national
geological and land resources work.
, To provide lending and reference services to the public.
, To popularize geology and disseminate geological knowledge to
the general public in the interests of national economic and social
development.
, To develop research into information systems that will enable
fast distribution of geoscience information, based on the needs
of the current state and future direction of the geological sciences;
to develop technology and standards for managing such information.
