In view of the present situation of the strong growth potential of kiwifruit branches and the rising management costs of the kiwifruit orchards,'zero-bud' pruning-a labor-saving technique in summer pruning was researched and promoted.`Zero-bud' pruning is based on the character of the`blind-node'(node without bud) in kiwifruit and is applied only in the fruiting branches with strong growth. In fact,`zero-bud' pruning is heading-back cut at the place of final fruit set in fruiting branch during summer pruning. As a result, the pruned branch would not stimulate the second or third vine and lost the potential of lateral vines stimulus.`Zero-bud' pruning is effective in controlling the vigor of kiwifruit and reasonable adjusting the relationship between the vegetative growth and-fruitfulness.`Zero-bud' pruning greatly reduces the workload of the summer pruning and provides a simple and practical new technology for kiwifruit with good quality, high yield and high efficiency cultivation. This paper expounds the principle of `zero-bud' pruning and summarizes the key points and effects of `zero-bud' pruning from the experimental data.
