Psychological resilience refers to the ability to thrive in the face of risk and adversity, which is crucial for individuals' mental and physical health. Although previous studies have investigated the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive functioning, little is known about the neural processes associated with psychological resilience. In this study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(rs-f MRI) to identify the brain regions underlying this construct by correlating individuals' psychological resilience scores with the regional homogeneity(Re Ho), and then examined how these resilience-related regions predicted life satisfaction in a sample of healthy young adults(N = 276). We acquired resting-state f MRI and behavioral data on psychological resilience and life satisfaction. We found that psychological resilience was associated with the Re Ho in the left insula(r=-0.24; p < 0.001), right insula(r=-0.24; p < 0.001) and dorsal ACC(r=-0.29; p < 0.001), all of which have been implicated in self-awareness, emotional processing, executive functioning, and stress responses. Crucially, the Re Ho in the dorsal ACC mediated the effects of psychological resilience on life satisfaction(95% confidence interval = [0.01, 0.08], p < 0.05). Together, our findings provide the first evidence for a functional neural marker for psychological resilience, and highlight a previously unidentified neural circuit(i.e., the dorsal ACC) linking psychological resilience and life satisfaction.
