The author became obsessed with Chinese studies when he was a sophomore. He broke through the restriction of the Cold War and conducted research on modern and contemporary Chinese education, risking losing his job.His research was eventually acknowledged by the Japanese academy. In addition,he indulged into child-centered education and devoted himself to the problembased learning in social studies.Since the end of the 1980s,he had visited china frequently and was invited to a landmark international educational conference in Shanghai. He had witnessed the tremendous changes in Chinese school education and shared the experience of Japanese education during his travels and lectures across the country.Looking back Chinese 40 years of curricular reform and relating several Japanese lessons, the author illustrates his understanding of studentcentered education with an expectation to promote the reform to a higher stage.
