Potential Seed Coatings Fabricated from Electrospinning Hexaaminocyclotriphosphazene and Cobalt Nanoparticles Incorporated Polyvinylpyrrolidone for Sustainable Agriculture

Among the phosphazenes, 2,2,4,4,6,6-hexaaminocyclotriphosphatriene (HACTP) is a potential ultrahigh fertilizer source. It is a water-soluble nitrogen and phosphorus compound (55-92-0) containing 54% nitrogen and 40% phosphorus, and the only other element present is hydrogen. This work was an attempt to incorporate this rich nutrient source into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) along with cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) to form an electrospun seed coating. They were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pH and conductivity studies showed a controlled release of nutrient from the fiber scaffolds as opposed to the fertilizer alone. Such seed coatings would enhance nutrient usage by the seedling thereby reducing leaching into environment. The pH range of aqueous solution of this material was conducive for plant growth. Based on these observations cowpea seeds were coated with HACTP/CoNPs incorporated PVP through an electrospinning process using ethanol and chloroform as solvents. CoNPs were synthesized by eco-friendly methods. The coated seed showed an increased imbibition rate which could help handle drought stress. The presence of fertilizer in the vicinity of the seedling given as a package would have the potential to increase germination rate and stand establishment.
