The present study deals with the results of the examination of 5346 patients, who were treated in the department of traumatology in the hospital at Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the winter seasons 99/00 to 05/06. It includes 3355 injured skiers who used a carving ski, and 1670 injured skiers who used a conventional ski. 321 patients were injured while skiing with special equipment such as Big Foot, Snow blade or Twin Tip. The study reveals that the injuries have changed since the introduction of the carving ski. Carving skiers suffer significantly less injuries of the knee, such as cruciate ligament ruptures as compared to conventional skiers. However, carving skiers are injured more often at the upper extremity. Especially the shoulder region is concerned significantly more frequently as compared to the conventional skiers.
