Low temperature, high magnetic field investigations of the nature of magnetism in the molecular semiconductor β- cobalt phthalocyanine (C32H16CoN8)

Magnetization (M) vs. temperature from 0.4 K to 300 K in β-CoPc is measured.

Peak at Tmax=1.9 K in the M vs. T data is observed.

The data fits the Bonner–Fisher model for linear chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

The fit yields the exchange constant J/kB=−1.5 K between Co2+ ions with spin 1/2.

At 1 K, M vs. H saturates at 60 kOe signifying ferromagnetic alignment of spins.
