A new edge chipping mechanism for rotary ultrasonic drilling of brittle materials was proposed by considering the effects of subsurface cracks.

A novel experiment method was developed to evaluate the size of machining-induced cracks.

The reduction of the size of cracks induced by machining is an important cause of the edge chipping reduction in rotary ultrasonic machining.
