We examine extrapair mating relative to male state and fertile female abundance in house sparrows.
Fewer females were fertile when males were parenting than at other times.
Male incidence of extrapair mating was high during incubation, low during feeding.
Attempting to attract or retain a social mate also limited male extrapair mating.
Males incubated less when more females were fertile.
