•We determined metal speciation in water systems using geochemical modelling tools.•Metal species presented were used to deduce the availability forms in the water systems.•Saturation indices were used to understand minerals and metal species present complexity.•Modelling adds value to other analytical methods hence saving time and resources.•Modelling studies assists in case study analysis and simulation work.
