The second part is concerned with the earthquake as an event in the history of the earth, with the preparation for the earthquake, the nature and intensity of the shock, the remarkable changes of level in land and sea-bed that accom-panied and followed it, and lastly, with the origin of the earthquake. In these pages, I have tried to give an outline of the results contained in more than forty memoirs and reports.
