摘要

In 1990, the first edition Geological Map of China (1:5,000,000)，compiled by senior academician Cheng Yuqi’ was formally published. The data was up to the end of 1988. In the autumn of 1999, Cheng considered that, in the 10 years ever since the publication of the map, China has made great achievement in the regional geological survey, and accumulated huge volumes of new data; it is necessary to update the map. In an attempt to do so, Cheng proposed to the former MGMR (Ministry of Geology & Mineral Resources) as a new scientific program to renew the map. This proposal was granted as one of the new-circle national geological survey program during 1999—2001 scheduled in CAGS (Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences), and was executed on June 16th，2000. From the above narration, our readers can apparently see that, the destination of compiling the second edition Geological Map of China is mainly to reflect the comprehensive new accomplishment and new data of the regional geological survey and the composite regional geological researches ever since 1988; the new edition is also aimed at displaying practically and effectively China's regional geological research extent of 20th century end; the new edition of the map could serve as a reliable small-scaled public-welfare basic geological map for the sustainable development of China's economy and for the long-term schedule of geological trade and for the researches in geosciences.
