Appraisal Method and Key Parameters for Screening Shale Gas Play

     Shale gas is a kind of unconventional gas from the fine-grain sedimentary rocks such as argillaceous rocks and needs to be produced commercially by special techniques such as horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing.Inspired by successful shale gas revolution in North America and by the optimistic assessment of shale gas resources,China has set off a wave of shale gas development in recent years.However,the successful development of shale gas has not been accomplished in one move in North America.The successful experience lies in selecting shale gas plays with higher resource endowment for horizontal drilling and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing through the implementation of geological research and engineering technology development project since the seventies of the 20th century.In accordance with the standards of shale gas evaluation parameters,the screening of shale gas play is to select the favorable block and the shale gas reservoir i.e.the gas shale with higher resource endowment for drilling and fracking.This is the first key step to the commercial success of shale gas exploitation.Some specific methods for shale gas screening and the key evaluation parameters affecting the shale gas reservoir scale and production are discussed,with a preliminary analysis of some problems existing in the shale gas assessment.It is suggested that the total organic content in shales is one of the key parameters in the assessment of the shale gas resource endowment.The mass fraction of TOC in gas shales is usually greater than 2.0 in the leading shale gas plays in North America.In Sichuan Basin,the mass fraction of TOC in the Longmaxi shale gas reservoir is generally greater than 3.0.The bottom of Longmaxi Formation with the highest gamma radiation is the highest shale gas resource endowment interval and also is the most important target zone for shale gas exploitation at present.The shale gas there is generally dominated by adsorbed gas in the shallower shales with high enrichment of organic matter.On the other hand,the shales in the deep and under high pressure and temperature are expected to have more free gases.Abnormally pressurized shale gas reservoir has better conditions for the preservation and enrichment of shale gas.The marine shale gas exploration in South China with the characteristics of complex structures and unfavorable preservation of shale gases not only has to face great challenges from the drilling and completion technology,but also to face enormous challenges from shale gas volumetric potential,water resource,pipeline infrastructure and the economic exploitation of shale gas.
