The author reconstructs the seawater phosphate concentration using a modeling approach. Theoretical analyses show that the authigenic and hydrothermal deposition of phosphorus from ocean is controlled by seawater phosphate concentration. The modeled seawater phosphate concentration shows dramatic increasing trend since 15 Ma due to the increasing phosphate input from the weathering of continental rocks. The increasing phosphate concentration is in phase with the increasing growth rate of phytoplankton as recorded in the degree of carbon isotopic fractionation, which agrees the general idea of the long-term control of seawater phosphate concentration on growth of marine phytoplankton. Increasing researches indicate that the roles biogenic aerosol may be overlooked in modulating the global paleo-climate changes. The promoted marine productivity caused by increasing seawater phosphate concentration would result in elevated biogenic aerosol in marine atmosphere, which may contribute significantly to the Late Cenozoic cooling through the direct and indirect radiative forcing of aerosol.
