Through a systematic analysis of the organic matter abundances, organic matter types and organic matter maturity of Chang-8 source rocks in Huaqing area, the hydrocarbon generation potentials were evaluated. The index type of rock pyrolysis (S₂ /S₃) and group composition of chloroform bitumen “A” reflected good organic matter types of which the main type was humic-sapropelic and a small amount was of sapropelic type and humic type.  According to the above,  the Chang-8 source rocks in Huaqing area have a good hydrocarbon generation potential of being significantly effective oil source rocks,  and attention should be paid to it in future studies.hemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
