•A set of phenology models for grapevine, of various complexity level, were compared.•All the models showed comparable accuracy under current climatic conditions.•Complex models did not outperform simpler ones.•The type of calibration dataset affected the onset of forcing units accumulation.•Under scenario conditions, different onsets of forcing caused divergent predictions.
