•A simple and comprehensive feasibility method is proposed in this paper.•Electricity consumption is estimated for typical Algerian dairy farms.•The optimal renewable energy configuration is determined for each Algerian region.•System sensitivity to renewable resources and farm load variation are analyzed.•Techno-economic and environmental impacts of designed systems are discussed.
