Small island states(SITs) have distinctive features compared with continental countries, large island states and islands that belong to sovereign countries. Tourism industry has been playing a significant role in its survival and development. This article uses literature citation network analysis software CiteSpace to draw the scientific knowledge map of SITs' tourism development via Web of Science database from 1987 to 2017. The study finds that tourism related research starts early, lasts long and presents a multidisciplinary distribution feature;tourism influence, climate change and economic growth have been constantly leading research topics;a collaborative research community network centered around coastal destination countries in North America and Europe has come into being. For the purpose of an in-depth and detailed analysis of tourism development, this paper focused on four perspectives of SITs tourism development review, namely, tourism development and local economy growth, tourism development constraints and risk management, tourism development and poverty alleviation, tourism development mode and governance. It is concluded thatthe positive and negative effects of tourism dependence, marine policy andisland restoration, tourism investment risks, etc have been long-lasting mainconcerns that need to be addressed, which provides useful experience and guidance for China's island tourism development and governance.
