A novel spray co-precipitation method to prepare nanocrystalline Y_2O_3 powders for transparent ceramics

Yttrium Oxide(Y_2O_3) ceramics have various potential applications in high-temperature-resistance windows,host materials for solid state laser,refractories,components of semiconductor devices.However,the fabrication of Y_2O_3 transparent ceramics is considered to be very difficult because the internal pores are hard to be completely removed during the sintering process.The densification of transparent ceramics is significantly impacted by the purity,morphology,particle size and distribution,especially the agglomerate state of raw powders[1].Therefore,the most key technology for fabricating transparent ceramics should be the synthesis of raw powders with high sintering activity.We designeda spray co-precipitation methodused to synthesize nanocrystalline Y_2O_3 powders for transparent ceramics,the scheme of spray co-precipitationis shown in Fig.1.The properties of co-precipitated powders and the microstructure as well as optical properties of as-fabricated ceramics under different aging times were systematically investigated.The research showed that the aging time had only slight effect on the morphology,particle size,particles size distribution and agglomeration degree of Y_2O_3 powders.All Y_2O_3 powders calcined at 1250 ℃exhibited approximately spherical morphology with narrow distributionand the mean particle size was ~150 nm,shown in Fig.2.
