We propose an investigation to study the use of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology over twisted pair cable to increase the currently achievable data rates using various DSL approaches. Simulation results are verified experimentally using a vector network analyzer.;This work focuses on characterization of practical Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) at frequencies up to several GHz. Not much literature is available on this subject. At these frequencies, lumped-element equivalent circuit of transmission lines are of limited use. Therefore, a distributed circuit element model and s-parameter description of irregularities is used. At these frequencies, small defects/bends in the UTP can dramatically affect the electromagnetic field of the propagating wave. To study these effects, UTP is modeled in EMPIRE (Electro-Magnetic field solver for the analysis of Packages, Interconnects, Radiators and waveguide Elements) simulator which solves Maxwell's equations using the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method. Long sections of UTP with these imperfections are simulated using the Agilent program ADS (Advanced Design System).
