A typical small quarry, producing agricultural limestone (dolomite) from the Jefferson City formation in southwest Missouri, was sampled bed by bed for chemical and spectrographic analyses.Calcium and magnesium are present as mega constituents, and Mn, Cu, B, Cr, Sr, Ba, Ni, Ag, V, with sporadic Pb and Zn are present as trace elements or potential micronutrients. Variations in composition between adjacent layers are notable.Brief consideration is given to the role of trace elements as micronutrients, the function of Ca and Mg limestone as a soil amendment, and the desirability of cooperative efforts by pedologists and geologists in the development of agricultural limestone deposits.
