Dynamic isoelectric focusing is a new technique that isrelated to capillary isoelectric focusing but uses additionalhigh-voltage power supplies to provide control over theshape of the electric field within the capillary. Manipulation of the electric field changes the pH gradient, enablingboth the location and width of the focused protein bandsto be controlled. The proteins can be migrated to adesignated sampling point while remaining focused, wherethey can be collected for further analysis. This ability tocollect and isolate the protein bands while maintaining ahigh peak capacity demonstrates that dynamic isoelectricfocusing has great potential as a first dimension in amultidimensional separation system. Dynamic isoelectricfocusing can achieve a peak capacity of over 1000, asshown by both mass spectrometry analysis and directimaging.
