We report the
synthe

s and magnetic characterization of Cu(1,3-bdc) (1,3-bdc = 1,3-benzenedicarboxylate), a novel
structurally perfect

2 metal-organic hybrid kagom&
eacute; antiferromagnet exhibiting propertie
s con
sonant with
spin fru
stration. In the kagom&
eacute;
structure, each monodentate carboxylate ligand bridge
s two copper ion
s in the kagom&
eacute; plane, and the three-atom bridge allow
s for the
shorte
st known metal-metal di
stance in any metal-organic hybrid kagom&
eacute; reported to date. The compound
show
s antiferromagnetic mean neare
st-neighbor
superexchange, a
s evidenced by
s/entitie
s/THETAV.gif">
CW = -33 K. The compound order
s ferromagnetically at 2 K and ha
s a fru
stration parameter,
f = 16.5, indicative of a
spin-fru
strated compound.
