The granulomas cell composition and cytokine expression depends on the development stage. In advanced granulomas a strong expression of IFN-γ and TGF-β was observed. Stage I and II granulomas exhibited low cytokine expression. IFN-γ is expressed mainly by macrophages and epithelioid cells. Numerous bacilli were observed in necrotic areas in stage III and IV granulomas with low level of IL-1β.
