The benefits of O3FA on cardiovascular risk factor control have been thoroughly investigated, yielding ample evidence of the benefits on cognitive and brain development in infants and anti-inflammatory actions in a number of diseases.
In this article, we review the available scientific evidence supporting O3FA supplementation in women and provide recommendations. Supplementation with 500 mg daily O3FA is recommended throughout a woman's life. Daily supplementation should be increased to 1 g for secondary cardiovascular prevention, to 1.5 g for menopausal symptoms (hot flashes), and to 2 g in patients with hypertriglyceridemia. At least 300 mg docosahexaenoic acid daily is recommended during pregnancy.
