Young carpenter bees are fed by their mother, which is critical for their survival. A small daughter (an alloparent) feeds her siblings if her mother is removed. Naturally motherless brood are always killed by predators, so no alloparents survive. When mothers survive, so do their brood, and daughters do not become alloparents. Alloparenting is a retained trait of social ancestors, now replaced by maternal care.
