Use of protected fat sources to reduce fatty acid biohydrogenation and improve abomasal flow in dry dairy cows

Ruminal biohydrogenation and fatty acid flow to the abomasum were studied in dairy cows. Added unsaturated fatty acid sources, especially non protected decreased ruminal acetate to propionate ratio. Whole raw soybean increased NDF ruminal digestibility in relation to calcium salts. Adding soybean oil to the diet, particularly when unprotected, increased oleic and linoleic biohydrogenation rates.
