Monitoring the condition of Marine Renewable Energy Devices through underwater Acoustic Emissions: Case study of a Wave Energy Converter in Falmouth Bay, UK

This article presents an analysis of underwater Acoustic Emissions for a WEC to identify acoustic signatures for Condition Health Monitoring.

It uses 2 years of broadband acoustic measurements and ancillary data from the Fred. Olsen Bolt-2 Lifesaver deployed in Falmouth Bay, UK.

Time-frequency analyses detect acoustic signatures of active PTO and other components in the frequency band 60 Hz–5 kHz monitored from 200 m away.

These results demonstrate the feasibility of remote monitoring of the health of Marine Renewable Energy Devices using their Acoustic Emissions.
