Mid-crustal deformation is characterized by a dense pattern of shear zones (sz) (>80 sz/km). Shear zone width and spacing depend strongly on the mica content of the plutonic host rock. Localization of deformation is controlled by pre-existing mechanical anisotropies. Strain localizes via ductile shearing and fracturing in granodiorite and granite, respectively. Multistage deformation and compositional heterogeneities result in a complex strain pattern.
