The advantageous effects of cathodic cage diameter on nitriding of AISI-304 are studied. Conventionally reported S-phase on austenite steel is decomposed to iron nitrides. Crystalline size and strain are influenced by cathodic cage diameter. Hardness is improved while reducing the cathodic cage diameter. Wear and corrosion rates are significantly reduced.
