OSL dating is used to quantify the long-term erosion rate in a tropical forest. About 4500 years BP the rate shifted from ~ 0.05 to ~ 0.13–0.21 mm year− 1. Our results are an order of magnitude higher than short-term rates from literature. Care should be taken when extrapolating short-term rates to 102–104 year scale.
