A magnesium treatment of the melt before water atomization improved the sphericity of ferrous powders. The Mg-treated powders have better flow, larger apparent and tap densities and contain fewer and smaller internal pores. Mg lead to longer solidification times by creating an insulating gas layer that renews itself during solidification. Mg increased the surface tension of the melt by reacting with dissolved sulfur.
