Crystalline cellulose spheres (Ces) were modified by crosslinking and oxidation. Aldehyde groups on oxidized Ces formed Schiff bases with the chitosan matrix. Composites with 65% aldehyde showed the most improved mechanical properties. Water and UV barrier properties were also enhanced.
