Some PCR products hybridized to catch-all probes, but did not hybridize to any species-specific probe tested. The results suggest the presence of an unrecognized Babesia species. Sequencing results showed the Babesia isolate differ from ovine Babesia species and genotypes currently available in the GenBank database. The isolate showed 90.9%, 93.5%, 93.4% and 91-93% identity to B. ovis, B. motasi, B. crassa and described ovine Babesia genotypes, respectively.
