Ag2+ is a powerful oxidizer capable of oxidizing even O2 in certain conditions. This cation has previously been thought to be incompatible with water, and the synthesis of Ag2+ compounds has previously been conducted in anhydrous environments. However, water molecules may in fact be attached to the voracious Ag2+ cation without decomposition, as shown by the formation and properties of the complex salt [Ag(OH2)2][Ag(SO4)2].
