Influence of Cation Exchange Capacity and Numbers of Alkyl-Chains on the Property of Organo-Montmorillonites
Both the natures of surfactant and crystal chemistry of montmorillonite affect the property of organo-montmo- rillonites. To study their correlation, three montmorillonites having different cation exchange capacities and four types of surfactants were used to synthesize organo-montmorillonites at different concentration. The basal spacings were obtained from XRD patterns. Thermal stability as well as the adsorption capacities of surfactants to montmorillonites was discussed according to the TG-DTG data. The results suggest that the CEC does not greatly impact basal spacing whereas dramatically influence adsorption capacities which increased with the increasing CEC.
